wells an i made it to offenburg, germany on thursday after a good training week for me in the ardennes.after three weeks off it felt so good putting in some descent training miles and i could feel my legs getting better each day.we also made a trip to the finish of the fleche wallone classic on wednesday afternoon.the riders looked so knarly going up the mur de huy for the last time, pale faces, red eyes and drool all over them.we stayed at the same hotel as last year which was nice.its so much easier if youre staying in a familiar place.it was also the hotels 150th aniversary so every night at dinner there was different groups of germans dressing up in the clothes from the era, singing songs and giving us a history lesson.
we rode the track on thursday and friday.it was the exact track from last year, albeit last year we raced in the mud,and it looked like we would have perfect conditions for the race this time around.
the day before the race we rode mostly on our road bikes to geet the leg speed going.its also good to use the powertap the day before to see what the power vs heartrate is like.
as i lined up in 56th place on the grid around 2pm on saturday i was feeling nervous.the previous week id ridden well at the start but folded to wards the end.i realy didnt want that to happen again.the track was only 5.1km long so this meant two 1.1km start loops and 7 laps of the full track for the pro men.the german cannon marked the start oof our race and as usual there was alot of bumping and bruising.on the first climb i moved up maybe 5 spots just to loose them again as two guys crashed into each other infront of me taking me down in the process.i was up in a flash and srted chasing hard as we started the second start loop.on the climb i got back onto the group and started moving up.throughout the first lap i was slowly ticking riders off.i was feeling realy good but on the first lap everyone does so it is hard to get by as most of the course was singletrack.after lap 1 i came through in 45th place ,but the groups infront of me were splitting which meant open track everytime i could get past a group.i kept the pace shard and by the end of the 4th lap i latched onto todds wheel and after a few jokes i decided to attack the group he was with.i was no sitting in 8th place with only two laps to go.the last laps went good except for falling over close to the feed zone...i kept it together and moved into 7th on the last lap.i was cramping alittle towards the end but my excitment overuled it completely and i got in for 7th 2min 10 seconds down on the winner absalon.i was also 2nd u/23 rider and got stand on the podium for this competition. its by far the biggest result of my carreer and i have finally proven to myself that i can ride up there with the best.
this week wellsy and i are hangin out in spain, just 40min out of madrid in a small mountain town
where we will prepare for the third round which takes place in the madrid park.the crowds there are crazy so im realy looking forward to it!
